It’s the Thought that Counts

It’s the damn truth.  And if you’re dating someone who thinks it’s the price tag that counts than you are dating the wrong type of woman.  Gifts are not the easiest things to choose.  But avoid the generic type such as: perfume, jewelry, flowers, or gift cards.  Unless you know for sure exactly what within that genre she loves or been wanting.  Perfume and jewelry are particularly difficult to pick out because they are personal to ones style and hard to pick the right one.  Nothing is worse than a gift you don’t want.  Here are some tips:

  1. Start noticing things.  Pay attention to her style and colors she wears.  Check out what type of magazines, books, or collections she may have.  Does she have any hobbies?  Check if she has a gift registry or wishlist online.  Listen for any remarks or cues.
  2. Ask subtle questions.  Steer conversation to reveal gift ideas.  Ask them for advice on a gift for someone else.  Or what they’d do if they got a bonus or won the lottery.  The best gifts are things someone wouldn’t buy themselves but really want.
  3. Enlist a double agent.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help from someone who may know her better.  Her BFF or co-workers.
  4. Make a note of it!  You’re likely to forget or have thought of a great idea 3 months before her birthday and by the time it rolls around it’s left your memory.

Some thoughtful examples of ideas:

  • If she likes to cook buy her a really nice chef’s knife, cute apron, or couples cookbook so you can cook together
  • If she’s more of a homebody she may enjoy a good board game or puzzle
  • If she has a sweet tooth make her her favorite dessert or buy her favorite candy bars
  • Something that compliments her hobby and she’s been complaining about that she’s needed.
