Poke!

December 19, 2011 § 1 Comment

Don’t poke a girl.  And I mean with your finger that is attached to your hand.  Gosh you have a dirty mind!  It’s quite juvenile and you are only going to make her self conscience when you stick your finger into her love handle.  That applies to the virtual world as well.  If you want her attention say real words to the girl.

Ed Hardley

I didn’t even need to post a picture that shows the dudes head, and whomever he is, he looks like a douche.  Don’t be one.  Don’t wear Ed Hardy. Ever.

Yo Grill

December 13, 2011 § Leave a comment

One of the first things that people notice about that handsome face of yours is that mouth full of teeth.  So I hope they are looking good because if they ain’t that’s one of the first things someone is going to notice about you.  Most of us at a young age were fitted with those god awful braces to straighten the grill.  If you weren’t so “lucky” there are alternative options such as Invisline that are less embarrassing to rock as an adult than a month full of metal.

Given is that you are hopefully brushing your teeth on the reg, which means morning and at night.  And please be flossing.  As a young chap this was less important but as your body gets older and more decrepit it’s important to keep the mouth hygiene clean by flossing and preventing gingivitis. Another great preventative option which is even better the mouth wash is hydrogen peroxide.

And lastly you should be keeping them pearly white.  Put something white up to your teeth to compare how yellow your teeth are if you haven’t noticed.  They don’t need to be beaming stark white where people have to be wearing stunna shades to be talking to you.  But they should not be yellow.  Try these affordable products:

Don’t Apologize

This is probably the only time I’d say don’t apologize and that’s when your in the sack.  Unless you really fuck up or accidentally elbow her in the face that is.  Don’t make an awkward situation any more awkward by profusely apologizing and making it more awkward or her just lying and saying its okay.  So you went limp or came early.  Shit happens but don’t let it ruin the mood.  If she’s not done, then turn the attention to her and make it up.

Curtains

December 9, 2011 § Leave a comment

Curtains make a big difference to a room/house. Remember when you moved into your place? Chances are, you put up some kind of curtains right away — if only that college standby, a tacked-up sheet or blanket.  Well you’re not in college anymore.

There is more than one thing wrong with this picture

Curtains provide privacy; they filter light; they affect the feel of a room. Most places if you rent come with some sort of blinds.  Typically they are outdated and dingy.  Depending on how cheap they are- they may not block out light as well.  A great alternative is curtains.

You can use curtains to change the look and feel of a room, and they’re a fast, easy and relatively inexpensive way to update your decor. Consider when and how the room is used, what’s outside, what exposure to light does the room have.

Stand back from the select window and envision what color, style and texture that you want.  Think about the furniture and wall color, etc.  Decide what would look good and serve your needs as well.  If it’s in a bedroom, you may prefer room darkening curtains.  If it’s in the living room or dining room, you might desire an airy look that you can still see some of the outdoors, like a sheer. Decide on the width and length.  Do you want curtains all the way across a wall?  Or just over the window?  Ceiling to floor length or just above window to window sill?  Make sure the proportions work for the room.

Stores I suggest for decorating on a budget include places like Ikea and Ross, other options are Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Choose the width and length of curtain, carefully.  Most curtains come in 63″ or 84″ lengths.  You can easily modify the length yourself with a no sewing seam tape that just requires an iron (this applies to non sheer curtains).  When mounting the rod and curtain, the rule of thumb for width is to add 4″ to each side of window for overlap.  This keeps the extra light from seeping into the room.  You can also layer curtains with sheer or non sheer under your main curtain fabric you choose, depending on what type of natural lighting you are trying to achieve.

Curtains are always a nice touch and alternative to blinds.

Not So Perfect Setting

I’m not a stickler for having matching plates and glasses or having any type of fine China. I never really understood the whole nice China on the wedding registry.  Clearly I have no plans to have fancy parties to entertain lots of guests.  But at minimum have more than 4 sets of plates, utensils and cups.  This helps so you don’t have to constantly do the dishes or run out of something when you have guests over.

For those on a real budget Goodwill is a great place to pick up super cheap utensils, cups, and plates.  They may not all match but they are cheap and I think it’s better to have 6 or more mismatching forks than only 2. The next upgrade option is a place like Ross or Marshalls.  You can pick up a new set for a really good price.  And if you want to go big, get married and you can put some fancy silverware and crystal on the registry because it can get absurdly expensive.

Freezer Fresh

I’m a firm believer in investing in a great pair or two of premium denim.  It sounds absurd to spend $150 on a pair of jeans but it’s a prime staple of our wardrobe.  You wear them just about every day.  If you get a great pair that fit you well you’ll know why you paid so much for them.

At least one pair of your jeans should be a dark indigo denim or a pair of raw denim.  You can dress them up or down and can pass in a more formal situation.  You want to protect that dark wash by washing them as least as possible.  And if you do wash them in cold water and turn them inside-out and avoid drying them.

Another alternative is throwing them in the freezer.  Freezer fresh!!  Fold them up and stick them in a plastic bag and squeeze out the air, and throw them in the freezer.  Some say overnight is enough other say a week.  Try them out and preserve your blues.

Color Me This

November 15, 2011 § Leave a comment

Most men’s wardrobe consists of black, grays, blues, and white.  So adventurous!  But I’m sure you’ve witnessed a colleague or friend wear a pink or bright colored shirt and get compliments from the ladies all day.  Question is how did he pull that off?   Whether you’re dark-skinned, medium-toned or pale-skinned, you can find appropriate colors for your complexion and get the ladies complimenting YOU all day.

Dark-skinned

Dark-skinned  guys tend to have black or dark brown hair and eyes. If you fall into this category, the colors that you wear should contrast with your dark features. The contrast breaks up an otherwise monotonous look and catches the eye.

Colors you look your best in:

  • pink
  • white
  • khaki
  • baby blue
  • gray

Colors you should avoid:

  • black
  • dark brown
  • turquoise
  • spring green
  • magenta

You should stay away from tropical colors and really dark shades. While black and navy blue are hard to avoid altogether because they basically make up the corporate uniform, try to keep them to a minimum and wear only when necessary.

Medium skinned tone

Medium-toned men can have anything from blonde locks to jet-black manes, and their eye color can vary from baby blue to onyx black. If you’re lucky enough to fall in this category, it means that you can wear just about any color and still look sharp. Since light and dark colors both contrast nicely with your skin tone, you can go either way. For bonus points, try matching your shirt with your eye color.

Colors you look your best in:

  • beige
  • burgundy
  • royal blue
  • navy
  • black
  • pink (stripes)

Colors you should avoid:

  • pistachio
  • mauve
  • dark brown
  • red
  • olive

The only colors that you should really avoid are those that might blend in too closely with your skin tone. For example, if you have an olive complexion, avoid wearing olive-colored or brown clothing.

Pale skinned tone

Pale-skinned men will tend to have red, blonde, or dirty blonde hair. Their eye color is often just as fair, including green, blue, gray, or hazel. If you match this description, your best bet is to go with more subdued colors and pastels. These will blend well with your skin tone, and create a look that’s both appealing and relaxing to the eye.

Colors you look your best in:

  • light blue
  • brown
  • beige
  • off-white
  • bold blue
  • Colors you should avoid:

  • red
  • pink
  • orange
  • yellow
  • purple
  • The key is to steer clear of harsh or bright colors since these will contrast with your skin in an unflattering way. Basically, your clothes will stand out while you fade into the background. That said, stay away from vibrant colors at all costs.

    Don’t Let it Snow

    November 14, 2011 § Leave a comment

Winter is coming upon us but let’s leave it up to Mother Nature with making it snow.  Dandruff is ew ew ew eww gross and embarrassing.  If you have it- do something about it.  Don’t let it continue.

    Step 1

Wash with an over-the-counter dandruff shampoo. Shampoos with ingredients such ketoconazole, salicylic acid, coal tar, zinc and selenium can help treat dryness and flaky skin. An alternative shampoo that may help reduce dandruff is one that contains tea tree oil. For the best effects, shampoo your hair with vigorous massaging for at least five minutes per day every day, then rinse it out completely. Once your dandruff is under control, cut back to only two to three times per week.

    Step 2

Switch between two or more dandruff shampoos each time you shampoo. You may find that one shampoo works for a while but then its effects seem to “taper off” after a couple of months. Switching back and forth each day can help ensure potency and keep your dandruff to a minimum.

    Step 3

Style your hair with few or no products. Sprays, gels, waxes and mousses can leave buildup on your scalp that appears as dandruff-like flaking. They may also cause your scalp to itch more.

    Step 4

Spend time in the sun. While overexposure to ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage and raise your risk of developing skin cancer, spending some time in the sun every day while wearing sunscreen on uncovered areas may help reduce your dandruff problem.

    Step 5

Chill out. Having stress can make you weaker and increase your risk of a number of health problems. If you’re under stress, finding at least 10 minutes in your day to take deep breaths and decompress may have the dual effect of alleviating dandruff problems.

    Step 6

Ask your doctor about prescription-strength dandruff treatments if you see no results after several weeks of shampooing. Your doctor may prescribe a stronger shampoo or steroid lotion for severe dandruff.
